27 May 2025

The engagement session with YB Adly Zahari, Deputy Minister of Defence, was also attended by Thomas Mathew, Group Chief Executive Officer of TalentCorp, and Mr Ramu Iyer, Vice President of Micron Memory Malaysia.

PENANG, 27 MAY 2025 – Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp), the strategic think tank under the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) continues to empower retired armed personnel through the second cohort of the Veteran MyWira initiative at Micron Memory Malaysia today.

During the event, YB Adly Zahari, Deputy Minister of Defence, engaged for the first time with participants from both the first and second cohorts of the Veteran MyWira programme. He took the opportunity to interact directly with the veterans and listen to their experiences transitioning into the civilian workforce.

He further reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence commitment to supporting initiatives that empower retired armed forces personnel through meaningful employment in future-ready industries.

“With the support of the Ministry of Human Resources through TalentCorp, the Ministry of Defence fully backs this strategic partnership with the Armed Forces Service Division (BPA) and the Department of Skills Development (JPK) to map and certify these valuable military skills accurately. By aligning trades and geographic locations with market needs, this collaboration ensures veterans are effectively matched to meaningful employment opportunities, strengthening Malaysia’s workforce and economic future,” he said.

YB Adly bin Zahari delivered the keynote address during the engagement session with ATM veterans through the Veteran MyWira programme.

The second cohort, in partnership with Micron Memory Malaysia, includes 24 retired armed forces personnel who began a six-month training in February 2025 to prepare for roles as technicians and supervisors. Together, the first two cohorts have attracted over 330 applications and interviewed 133 candidates, showcasing veterans’ strong commitment to continue serving the nation in new capacities.

TalentCorp’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Mathew, emphasised that the organisation remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the nation’s retired armed forces personnel as they transition into the civilian workforce.

“We recognise the wealth of experience, discipline, and leadership they bring from their years of service, and we believe these qualities are highly valuable in today’s competitive industries.

“Through programmes like Veteran MyWira, we aim to create meaningful pathways for them to continue contributing to the nation in new capacities. This is our way of giving back — by honouring their sacrifices and ensuring they are supported in building a secure and fulfilling second career,” he said.

Mr. Amarjit Sandhu, Corporate Vice President, Assembly and Test for NAND Operations highlighted that, "At Micron, we create a space where every voice is valued, and curiosity is cultivated. By integrating the unique skills of our Malaysian Armed Forces veterans into the semiconductor industry, we build a more resilient and industry-ready talent ecosystem. This collaboration reflects our unwavering commitment to empowering communities and ensuring that no one is left behind.”

Launched in January 2024, Veteran MyWira is a TalentCorp and PERHEBAT initiative under the Ministry of Defence that provides sustainable post-retirement careers and upskilling opportunities for ATM veterans, focusing on private sector employment and industry-driven skills development. With over 300,000 veterans in Malaysia possessing transferable Industry 4.0 skills, the programme repositions them as skilled professionals ready to contribute to high-impact sectors such as semiconductors and advanced manufacturing.

In the pilot programme launched in September last year, 25 veterans were hired into full-time roles with Micron after completing a three-month training course at the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) and the Walta Centre of Excellence (COE). They now serve as technicians and supervisors, leveraging their prior experience and skills in their new positions.
