Environmental Sustainability with Purpose: How Biocon Creates Lasting Change
Discover Biocon’s approach to environmental sustainability, from renewable energy adoption and water conservation to community-driven programmes.
Biocon Sdn Bhd’s journey in environmental sustainability reflects the same depth of commitment the company brings to its core mission: improving lives.
With over 40 years of experience advancing biotechnology and developing treatments for diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases, Biocon understands that a better tomorrow depends not only on innovation, but on how employees, communities, and the environment are cared for together.

“Our core business is to provide access to all our patients with life-saving medicine,” says Joe Sian Chean Fei, Vice President & Site Head. “We also believe that taking care of the environment for the community in the country where we operate is also a key responsibility of our company.”
This holistic approach has earned Biocon Malaysia recognition as a winner of the LIFE AT WORK Awards (LAWA) 2024 under the Environmental Practices category.
Beyond environmental outcomes, Biocon was recognised for embedding sustainability into how people work and collaborate, thereby strengthening employee engagement and a culture of shared responsibility.
Tangible Impact Through Innovation
Biocon’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident the moment one enters its facilities, where sustainability measures translate into measurable outcomes.
The company has installed over 7,000 solar panels across its operations, significantly reducing its reliance on conventional energy sources.
Water conservation receives equal attention through sophisticated recycling systems that process approximately 1,000 cubic metres of water daily. Complementing this is a rainwater harvesting system capable of collecting about 25,000 litres, ensuring efficient water resource management.
Even in operational details, sustainability drives decisions. Motion-activated lights reduce unnecessary energy consumption, while the warehouse has eliminated plastic packaging entirely, opting instead for reusable belts to wrap products. This single initiative saves approximately 5,000 kilograms of plastic annually.
“These are the tangible impacts that we have made, and we are very proud of this,” Joe Sian shares.
Building Greener Neighbourhoods Together
Biocon’s environmental stewardship reaches well beyond its facilities through active collaboration with government agencies and the local community.
The company has planted more than 3,000 trees in partnership with community members and government agencies, including young trees around its facilities to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance local ecosystems.

Their collective efforts have also delivered these remarkable outcomes:
-
20,000 effective microorganism mudballs deployed into Johor waterways to reduce pollution and stabilise pH levels
-
500 metres of drains cleared, removing around 30 metric tonnes of sewage and debris
-
2 tonnes of waste, largely single-use plastics, removed from Johor beaches through ‘No Plastic’ campaigns
This outward-looking approach reflects Biocon’s philosophy that environmental sustainability must involve and benefit the communities in which it operates.
Powered by Passionate Volunteers
At the heart of Biocon’s environmental efforts lies an extraordinary volunteer force comprising over 30% of the company’s employees, many of whom involve their families and children in sustainability initiatives.
“The true drivers of this environmental impact are our Biocon Malaysia volunteers,” explains Sugeetha Nair Kersenernayer, Associate Manager for Sustainability and CSR. “At Biocon, we believe that the purpose goes beyond business. It’s about nourishing the communities and ecosystems that sustain us.”
This spirit of service extends beyond environmental action into social responsibility. Volunteers distribute packed meals to the homeless, organise diabetes education programmes in schools, and provide free medical screenings for individuals who cannot afford treatment.
Through these initiatives, employees contribute beyond their day-to-day roles, taking collective ownership of real-world impact. These shared experiences foster teamwork, pride, and a strong sense of belonging, reinforcing why employees choose to grow and stay with Biocon.
As one volunteer, Warehouse Assistant Manager Muhammad Bin Ismael, reflects, sustainability at Biocon is not only about the environment, but also about people, creating meaningful moments that stay with employees long after the workday ends.
Recognition That Inspires Continued Action
For Biocon Malaysia, winning at LAWA 2024 validates years of dedicated environmental work while fuelling momentum for even greater initiatives ahead.
The award demonstrates something the team has long believed: that humans, science, technology, business, and the planet can thrive in harmony when guided by genuine commitment and collaboration.
As Malaysia’s business landscape evolves toward greater environmental responsibility, Biocon shows that meaningful change happens when companies embed sustainability into their DNA and empower their people to become active stewards of both environment and community.
